The World Health Organization\u2019s 2014 study found that in one population, when daily caloric intake of sugar increased from 0% to 5%, the amount of tooth decay <em>doubled<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cut Sugar Intake In Half<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After the study, The World Health Organization cut their recommendations for sugar consumption in half, from 10% of our daily caloric intake, to 5% (and ideally, less). Currently, the average American gets <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/databriefs\/db122.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>12-15% of his or her daily calories<\/strong><\/a> from sugar\u2014and America isn\u2019t even the highest consumer of sugar worldwide!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Beware Of Hidden Sugars<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How do you cut back on sugar? In addition to cutting back on sweets, it\u2019s important to be aware of <em>hidden<\/em> sugars in our diets. Even a \u201cnutritional\u201d food can be packed with sugar! On our food labels, sugar goes by numerous aliases, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Molasses &amp; Maltose<\/li>\n<li>Corn syrup, Malt &amp; Dextrose<\/li>\n<li>Sorghum syrup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This list is only a sampling<\/strong>. Keep an eye out for anything ending in \u201c-ose,\u201d \u201csugar,\u201d or \u201csyrup,\u201d and educate yourself on more alternate names <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oralanswers.com\/50-names-for-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3 More Tips For Cutting Back On Sugar<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Read labels, and check for hidden sugars.<\/li>\n<li>Cook more at home so you know exactly what\u2019s going into your food.<\/li>\n<li>Cut back on soft drinks, fruit juices, granola bars, yogurt, and sugary cereal in addition to regular sweets.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>A Healthier Diet = A Healthier Mouth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to cut out sugar entirely to have healthy teeth.
