What Is a Bone Graft and Will I Need One?
When patients begin exploring dental implants, they’re often unfamiliar with the term “bone graft.” A bone graft is a procedure used to rebuild or strengthen areas of the jawbone that may not have enough support for a dental implant.
After a tooth has been missing for an extended period of time, the surrounding jawbone can begin to shrink or weaken due to a lack of stimulation. Since dental implants rely on strong, healthy bone for support, some patients may require grafting before implant placement.
A bone graft works by adding bone material to the area where additional support is needed. Over time, your body naturally integrates this material and creates a stronger bone structure. This helps create a stable foundation for long-term implant success.
Not every patient will need a bone graft. During your consultation at Lake Oconee Dentistry, we’ll use digital imaging and a thorough examination to evaluate your bone levels and determine whether grafting is recommended.
Many patients are relieved to learn that bone grafting is a very common and routine procedure in implant dentistry. In fact, it often makes dental implants possible for patients who may not otherwise qualify.
Our goal is always to create the healthiest and most predictable foundation for your new smile. If you’ve been told you may not have enough bone for implants, we encourage you to schedule a consultation and learn more about your options.
